CREEKSPEAK! 2009 – Nature, Art and Culture in the Putah Creek Watershed
Citizen’s Restoration

Join local ecosystem restoration expert Chris Rose (Chair of the Putah Creek Council) as he explores the restoration successes along Putah Creek, many of which were done with volunteers. CREEKSPEAK! is a series of community talks and outings on nature, art, science and culture in the Putah Creek watershed held on the second Thursday of each month, May through October 2009, at the Winters Community Center in downtown Winters. The purpose of the CreekSpeak! series is to share knowledge about the natural and cultural resources of the Putah Creek watershed and to inspire audiences to actively explore the watershed we live in. Talks are interactive and engaging and will be followed by thematically linked Saturday Outings at various locations in the watershed. Some Outings have specific times and locations for gathering; others are self-directed experiences, and some Outings have both options. For more information, go to http://www.putahcreekcouncil.org. Sponsored by the John Muir Institute of the Environment.

Workshop on the Effects of Voluntary Vaccination of Childhood Diseases

Over the past decade, the incidence of measles has increased in countries with voluntary vaccination. Some public health experts attribute this to a decrease in vaccination coverage due to concerns about the measles vaccine and an unproven link to childhood autism among some members of the public. We invite you to attend a one-day informal workshop on the effects of voluntary vaccination on the temporal dynamics of measles and other vaccine-preventable childhood diseases. This workshop, sponsored by the National Science Foundation’s Collaborative Learning at the Interface of Biology and Mathematics (CLIMB) program at UC Davis, will focus on how human vaccination behavior influences disease dynamics. In addition to plenary talks and informal working discussions, the workshop will include an afternoon session of contributed papers. Contributed papers may describe completed work, work in progress, or planned research on modeling the spread of disease using innovative biomedical, evolutionary, ecological, or anthropological approaches. By bringing together theoreticians, medical professionals, educators, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers, the workshop will highlight how collaboration can improve our understanding of these potentially dangerous diseases. The workshop is free, but preregistration by September 8 is required. For more information or to preregister, please visit http://climb.ucdavis.edu/cohorts/mmr.html.
